About Gottman Marriage Therapy

How Gottman Therapy Works

The Gottman Method is a research-based approach to couples therapy developed from over 40 years of relationship research by Drs. John and Julie Gottman. This approach focuses on helping couples improve communication, manage conflict in healthier ways, strengthen emotional connection, and build a stronger foundation of trust and friendship.

In Gottman therapy, couples learn practical tools to better understand one another, navigate difficult conversations, reduce negative communication patterns, and increase emotional closeness. Therapy focuses not only on resolving conflict, but also on strengthening the friendship, respect, and connection that support long-term relationship health.

The Gottman Method is grounded in decades of scientific research observing thousands of couples and identifying the patterns that predict both relationship success and relationship distress. Research from the Gottman Institute has found that couples in healthy, stable relationships tend to maintain at least a 5:1 ratio of positive interactions to negative interactions during conflict. Studies have also shown that emotional responsiveness, healthy conflict management, and friendship within the relationship are some of the strongest predictors of long-term relationship satisfaction.

Gottman-based interventions have been shown to improve communication, emotional intimacy, conflict resolution, and overall relationship satisfaction for many couples. Research also suggests that couples who learn and consistently practice these skills often experience stronger emotional connection, increased trust, and greater relationship stability over time.

Whether you are navigating recurring conflict, emotional distance, parenting stress, trust concerns, or life transitions, Gottman therapy provides practical and evidence-based tools to help couples reconnect and grow together as a stronger team.

If your relationship feels stuck, disconnected, or overwhelmed, you do not have to navigate it alone. I would be honored to support you and your partner as you work toward healing, understanding, and deeper connection together.
